Air Pollution Slightly Increases the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer
Air pollution slightly increases the risk of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest forms, with one of the lowest five-year survival rates. While factors such as smoking, type 2 diabetes, or obesity are already known to influence its development, a recent analysis suggests that prolonged exposure to certain atmospheric pollutants could also play a role.
Researchers examined the effects of two common pollutants: fine particulate matter suspended in the air and nitrogen dioxide, a gas often linked to road traffic. Once inhaled, these substances can trigger inflammatory reactions in the body. The smallest particles are even capable of crossing the lung barrier to enter the bloodstream, thereby reaching other organs, including the pancreas. This mechanism provides a plausible biological explanation for their potential impact on the occurrence of tumors.
The study followed more than 480,000 American adults over several years. Participants, aged 50 to 71 at the start of the survey, had their exposure to pollutants estimated based on their residential address. The results show a slight increase in the risk of pancreatic cancer among those exposed to higher concentrations of fine particles. This association remains moderate, with a 3% risk increase for every 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air. For nitrogen dioxide, the increase is even lower, at around 2% for every 10 parts per billion rise in the atmosphere.
These links are particularly visible among individuals aged 55 to 64 at the time of their inclusion in the study. In contrast, no clear trend was observed among those over 70, where the risk even appears to decrease, although this observation requires further investigation. Geographic differences were also noted, with certain areas like Atlanta or North Carolina showing more pronounced associations, likely due to variations in pollutant composition or local population characteristics.
Researchers emphasize that these findings add to a still limited body of studies on the subject. Although the identified links are not statistically significant, they confirm previous observations suggesting a possible impact of atmospheric pollutants on the development of pancreatic cancer. Fine particles, already classified as carcinogenic for the lungs, could therefore contribute, even modestly, to increased risks for other types of cancer.
This study reinforces the idea that the quality of the air we breathe every day could have long-term consequences for our health, far beyond the respiratory problems traditionally associated with pollution.
