Does Alzheimer’s Disease Accelerate Brain Aging by More Than a Decade?
Brain aging involves gradual changes in its structure and function. In people with Alzheimer’s disease, these changes occur much faster and are more pronounced than in normal aging. Recent research has shown that this disease can accelerate brain atrophy by about twelve years compared to healthy aging. This discovery is based on the analysis of biological and mechanical processes that transform the brain over time.
Two proteins play a central role in this process: beta-amyloid and tau protein. Beta-amyloid first accumulates in the brain, long before the first signs of cognitive decline appear. It paves the way for tau protein, which then damages neurons and accelerates the degradation of brain tissue. Together, these two proteins alter the shape and volume of the brain, particularly in areas such as the entorhinal cortex and the supramarginal gyrus, which are among the first affected.
Scientists have developed tools to measure these transformations. They observe cortical thinning, widening of the brain’s sulci, and enlargement of the ventricles. These indicators help distinguish normal aging from pathological aging. For example, cortical thickness and the stretching of certain brain areas are early and sensitive signs for detecting the onset of the disease.
The most vulnerable regions are mainly located in the temporal and occipital lobes. The entorhinal cortex, in particular, shows signs of fragility very early. These observations confirm that Alzheimer’s disease does not merely age the brain faster, but does so unevenly, targeting certain areas before others.
These findings highlight the importance of detecting the early signs of the disease to better understand its progression. They also pave the way for more precise diagnostic tools, capable of identifying changes before symptoms become apparent. By better understanding how and where the brain degrades, researchers hope to develop methods to slow down or even prevent this damage.
